The Baritone is a Polish feature film from 1985.

action

The film is set in late January 1933. Antonio Taviatini is an internationally acclaimed opera star . The baritone is coming back to Poland after 25 years abroad. When visiting his hometown he has his entire entourage with him. There is his wife Sophie, his secretary Artur Netz, his silent masseur Leonardo, his doctor, his make-up artist Gertruda and of course his personal pianist Fryderyk. In their hometown, they meet family members like the Sterns or cousin Froelich. Taviatini is restless and does not feel comfortable in his skin. The building of operas in Strasbourg is a particular burden for him . An opera built for him. He is mostly concerned with himself and so does not notice anything of the affair between his wife Sophie and his secretary Artur Netz. Artur has big goals. He wants to become director of the newly built opera. His chances rise when Taviatini suddenly loses his voice. He is supposed to give a short concert on the balcony of the hotel, where the entire entourage is housed. Netz simply plays a record and the dizziness is not noticed. But none of this is of any use to him. Netz loses the post of director to Sophie's cousin. Froelich is close to the National Socialists , and when they take power in Berlin one day later, on January 30th, he becomes director of the opera.

Awards

Janusz Zaorski was awarded the Silver Lion at the Polish Film Festival in 1985. Screenwriter Feliks Falk received the award for the best screenplay and Witold Adamek for the best camera.
