occupation

The Boss Sends His Best Man is an Italian-German-Spanish agent film from 1966 with Stewart Granger as the British secret agent and Peter van Eyck as his villainous opponent in the lead roles.

action

Born in Britain, Jimmy Merrill freelances for the US foreign intelligence service and is notorious for his rude methods. But he is very successful for this, and that is why his boss sends him, his best man, to the Middle East after the murder of a US colleague, to track down the notorious boss of an even more notorious secret organization called "Green Star" and to render it harmless. This organization kills one western agent after another. The head of this organization is called Oscar Rubeck, is an experienced German secret service man from the unfortunate Nazi times, and now works with several large industrial and professional contract killers. The Americans suspect communist pullers behind the contract killings against Western agents, as they would derive the greatest benefit from the contract killings.

Merrill is initially flying to Morocco to meet his Norwegian colleagues Erik and Edith. They are looking for Rubeck themselves, considering him to be the mastermind behind a perfidious assassination attempt on a Norwegian peace mission at the time of the Suez Crisis (1956). In Marrakech, Merrill immediately got to know the tough approach of his opponents and soon got himself on the hit list. Rubeck has a loyal professional killer at his side with Alexej, whom he picked up and taken with him as a boy in the East during World War II. But Merrill is not exactly squeamish either and shoots his opponents without batting an eyelid if he is not - just like James Bond - tinkering with the ladies. Two women will soon be killed in this dangerous operation. Merrill escapes one or the other attack until he finally faces Rubeck. Then there is a showdown ...

Production notes

The Chef Sends His Best Man was filmed in Marrakech, Tangier (both Morocco) and London in 1966 and premiered in Italy on October 15, 1966. The German premiere took place on April 14, 1967.

useful information

The boss sends his best man is a typical product of the so-called "Eurospy" wave of films that had been rampant in continental Europe at that time since the great international success of the James Bond films. The majority of these films were co-produced between Spain, Italy, the Federal Republic and France.

criticism

For the lexicon of international films , The Boss sends his best man a “brutal agent film whose ironic approaches are drowned in the accumulated clichés”.

Spain's Guia del video-cine etched: "One of the contributions by the despised Sergio Sollima, staged as part of the 'Pseudo-Bond' gold vein."
