The Enemy in My Life is a German television film from 2013 that revolves around a police officer and family man who becomes a figure skater's stalker.

action

The police officer Martin Breiler and his colleague Lorenz are called to the house of the figure skater Katarina Witt because of disturbance of the peace . Martin is immediately fascinated by her. When he told his wife Sabine and his children Laura and Tobias about meeting Katarina the next day, he was persuaded by them to ask them about tickets for their ice show "Summernight on Ice". He drives over to her and is told that the tickets will be ready at the cash desk on the day of the performance.

The encounter with the famous figure skater left a great impression on the young police officer and completely changed his life. Not only that Katarina made a big impression on him as a woman, the way she lives and that money doesn't seem to play a role also captivates him. When he learns that Katarina has been stalked by a stalker a few years ago , he takes this as an opportunity to get closer to her and declares himself her personal protector. He brings one of the artist's swimsuits into his possession and leaves her in the belief that the former stalker has become active again. Katarina gratefully takes his help and Martin hardly leaves her side.

Breiler's wife Sabine notices with concern how much her husband has changed and confronts him with her suspicion that she thinks another woman, namely Katarina Witt, is involved. Martin freaks out, overreacts completely and moves out of the marital apartment. With the money the couple raised for building a house together, he buys a convertible and on his first trip imagines that Katarina is sitting next to him and talking to him. Sabine seeks help from Justus Sonnleitner, a mutual friend and at the same time Martin's superior. Justus is convinced that Martin is delusional and that his love for Katarina is one-sided. Sabine finds it difficult to believe that, she wants to save her marriage and continues to fight for her husband.

Meanwhile, Martin continues to secretly observe Katarina and act towards others as if he were with her. One day, when the figure skater hears disturbing noises in her house, she calls Martin. When she hears Martin's cell phone ringing in the immediate vicinity, the connections suddenly become clear to her and she realizes that Martin has been fooling her. She notifies the police. On the day of the ice show, Martin wants to pick up his card at the cash register, but Sabine has taken it. Martin can still gain access to the ice rink. As he approaches his family, Sabine lets him know that under the circumstances she does not want to watch this show with him and the children. Shortly afterwards, Sabine looks for Katarina in her cloakroom and tries to make it clear to the figure skater that Martin is her husband and will return to her again. Katarina can only reply that she has not the slightest interest in Sabine's husband. Martin, who has meanwhile dressed in a polar bear costume and is standing on the edge of the ice, throws the stolen bathing suit onto the ice. He learned from Katarina that this was a sign from the stalker that he was near her and would not give up. Martin hopes to bind Katarina closer to himself, since fear will return to her life. When the police intervene and search for the perpetrator, the young police officer manages to escape. He goes straight to Katarina's house, inspired by the thought that he and Katarina are meant for each other. There is an exchange of words - suddenly Sabine and his children are standing on the terrace and his superior Justus Sonnleitner is with them too. Your attempt to bring Martin back to reality fails. Martin's colleague Lorenz also appeared unnoticed, and in the confusion that followed, Martin was shot.

Martin Breiler sits blankly on a bench in the park of a psychiatric clinic while Sabine and the children bathe in the lake.

Production and publication

On August 15, 2012, Sat.1 announced the production of the thriller Das Verfassnis with Katarina Witt and Matthias Koeberlin in the leading roles. In this film, Witt makes her acting debut and has trained more on the ice again because she didn't want a double. Witt said of the film: “I developed the idea for the film together with the scriptwriter and director Bernd Böhlich. After intensive preparation, I am really looking forward to this new challenge and to working with Bernd Böhlich, whose work as a director I have always admired. ”The film is also based on Katarina Witt's own experiences, who was followed by a stalker herself.

The shooting took place from August 14th to September 17th, 2012 in Berlin .

The film premiered on Sat.1 on January 23, 2013 under the title The Enemy in My Life .

reception

Audience ratings

The first broadcast on January 23, 2013 wanted to see only 1.71 million people, this led to a weak 5.2% audience rating. In the advertising-relevant target group , only a very poor 5.1% were achieved and they were thus far below the broadcaster average.

criticism

TV Today was of the opinion that the story, put together from plot set pieces from 'Bodyguard' to 'Fatale Desires', was about as convincing as the cow on the ice - meant, of course, the proverbial and not ex-world champion Witt.

In the Süddeutsche one can read “that Matthias Koeberlin convincingly [plays] the Witt-addicted policeman Martin Breiler, because he [draws] the viewer into his madness and in a certain way [makes] a co-stalker a voyeur." [... ] Regarding Katarina's Witt's acting work, it is noted that “the surface on which it still looks most convincing is the untouched ice.” […] The pictures by Bernd Böhlich are also praised, which make it clear that "Breiler is nothing but a prisoner, the victim of a projection."
