In addition to the story of the brief escape from a life determined by rules and stupidity, the film deals with the topics of "EU eastward expansion" and "bureaucracy": Hans-Werner Müller, a German police officer from Berlin, is on the Polish-Ukrainian border where he falls in love with the Ukrainian smuggler Lippa. Due to private and professional problems, Müller is more and more restricted (his wife wants to divorce him, his local German boss is pedantic and heartless) and at the same time he gets to know the impartial Lippa better and better, which soon puts him in a quandary between work and friendship device. Finally, he decides to show her Berlin for one night - at the end of the film, however, Müller lives again with his wife, who had previously separated from him.

The border guard and the girl won the European CIVIS Prize for Integration in Strasbourg in 2005 . Hartmut Schoen , the author and director, was honored with the main actors.

The film was also nominated for the 2006 Adolf Grimme Prize in the “Fiction and Entertainment” category.
