The Herr Kanzleirat is a film by Hubert Marischka from 1948. It is based on Schwank Das Rote Tuch, first performed in 1930, by Julius Horst and Wolfgang Pollaczek . The German premiere of the film was on November 26, 1948.

action

Regional judge Leopold Bachmayer is an extremely law-abiding person. So he gets completely beside himself when his landlady serves him butter that she has bought from surreptitious trading. In addition, the unmarried state judge is a misogynist. That changes suddenly when, shortly before his vacation, he is cast under the spell of the seductive Marianne Seewald, whom he has to interrogate because of a brooch allegedly stolen from the maid. His husband Fritz he previously dismissed as "Simandl" and "washcloth", who does not deal with his wife strictly enough. Mrs. and Mr. Seewald quarrel, whereupon the amorous Bachmayer sees his chance come and Marianne travels to Velden am Wörthersee . There he saves her from the intrusiveness of a guest and pretends to be her husband so as not to provoke a scandal. Fritz Seewald also appears in Velden and presents himself as the regional judge Bachmayer.

The district court president Waltersheim wants to marry his daughter Lilly and sees a suitable candidate in the - wrong - regional judge. Fritz Seewald does not want to embark on this adventure until he has become a higher regional judge. Lilly loves the Dr. Hofstätten, who was briefly secretary at Bachmayer, who threw her out of his room the day before.

The previously almost pedantic law-abiding judge Bachmayer is thrown completely off course: He makes a false report, insults a postman, plays gamble, embezzles money, duels and steals a car. In the meantime, Waltersheim had let his connections play, and Bachmayer, who had returned to Vienna, was promoted to the higher regional judge and transferred to his new district on Lake Wörthersee . There he is supposed to conduct the proceedings that have meanwhile been brought against the - wrong - Mr Seewald himself. The right Mr. Seewald finally bailed him out, so the dizziness goes undetected.

production

After the success of the comedy Der Hofrat Geiger from 1947, Hubert Marischka looked for a similar material in order to be able to build on the success. He decided to make a film adaptation of the play The Red Cloth , in which Hans Moser had already played his star role of the Bachmayer chancellery at the theater.

The film was made in the Rosenhügel film studios with exterior shots of Velden am Wörthersee . The world premiere took place on May 21, 1948 in Vienna , in Germany the film premiered on November 26, 1948 in Karlsruhe .

Mr. Kanzleirat is assigned to the tourist film genre , which "is a modern variant of the Heimat film [and] mainly [is] determined by the location of the event". In particular, the film promotes the then glamorous seaside resort of Velden am Wörthersee, which, in contrast to the Wachau and the swimming lakes in Carinthia, was more difficult to reach from Vienna and should therefore be made known to a larger audience.

Hans Lang's title Der alten Herr Kanzleirat , sung by Hans Moser, became a popular hit.

Reviews

The lexicon of international films described Der Herr Kanzleirat 1990 as a “unreal comedy that only gets some appeal from Hans Moser.” In its 1997 edition, the LdIF called the film “a comedy that is entirely based on its performance and Viennese charm Script and direction show clear weaknesses. All in all, an entertaining, but rather unimaginative conversation. "

For Adolf Heinzlmeier and Berndt Schulz , Der Herr Kanzleirat was an unimportant film that received 1½ out of 4 possible stars (= moderate). Other critics described the film as a "humorous and clean comedy."
