action

As a single mother, Belgian Elisabeth Devolder reacted with great concern when she learned from the authorities that her 18-year-old daughter Elodie had secretly converted to Islam and wanted to join jihad . With the support of a friend, she travels to Turkey, where Elodie - who now calls herself Umsana - was last seen. Elodie informs her mother via SMS that she has meanwhile traveled on to Syria. Elisabeth then tried several times to cross the border into Syria , but without success. There is war in Syria; the border guards only allow humanitarian aid into the country. Back at the Turkish hotel in Hatay, she learns that Elodie's small tour group has been attacked by a drone . Only Elodie survived the attack. Elisabeth goes immediately to the Istanbul hospital where the seriously injured person was admitted. To her horror, she has to discover that Elodie continues to feel drawn to her fellow believers and does not feel any need to return home with her mother.

background

The film was shot in Belgium, Istanbul and the western Algerian province of Tlemcen .

criticism

"Depressing and consistent drama that tells its story in a straightforward and pleasantly simple way and with almost idyllic images creates a successful contrast to the tragedy of the helpless main character."
