The monk (original title: Le moine ) is a Spanish-French literary film adaptation by the director Dominik Moll from 2011 . It is based on the novel The Monk from 1796 by the British writer Matthew Lewis .

action

Ambrosio, a young child, is abandoned outside the gates of a Spanish monastery. When the monks find the little boy, they take him in and raise him to be a godly preacher. This upbringing strengthens Ambrosio's faith so much that there is no doubt that he is above temptation. The conviction is put to the test when a mysterious novice enters the monastery. Suddenly inexplicable things happen in the old walls. The events lead to madness and frenzy entering the monastery and the faith of its residents to be put to a severe test. In the midst of the action is the deeply religious Ambrosio. For the first time he is faced with a power that threatens to destroy his religious worldview.

criticism

The lexicon of international film described the film as “a visual and sonically brilliant”, as well as “excellently played adaptation” of the literary model.
