Der Schlunz is a Christian children's book series for children aged eight and over by Harry Voss with illustrations by Thomas Georg , which comprises seven volumes. The main character is a boy, called Schlunz, who has lost his memory and is turning the life of the Schmidtsteiner family upside down. The book series , which is a coproduction of the publishing house SCM R. Brockhaus and the Biblesebund , has sales of over half a million "Schlunz" books, and more than 125,000 DVDs of the series have been sold. In 2010 and 2011, based on the plot of the books, the television series "Der Schlunz - Die Serie" was produced.
The book Der Schlunz was published in Dutch in early September 2011 by Gideon-Verlag under the title Kwibus . Subsequently, two books are expected to appear per year.
action
The Schmidtsteiner family discovers a neglected and lonely boy in the forest who has lost his memory and can only remember being called "Schlunz". A child psychologist tries, initially unsuccessfully, to restore his memories. Since he quickly made friends with ten-year-old Lukas, he was allowed to stay with the Schmidtsteiners until his real parents were found.
In addition to Lukas, the Schmidtsteiner family also includes his sister Nele, his mother Ute and his father Jens Schmidtsteiner. Schlunz experiences many adventures together with Lukas while trying to find his memory again. The Schlunz goes to the children's church service for the first time and repeatedly embarrasses the religion teacher, Adelheid Budenprunk, with his curious questions. Only through the Schlunz does Luke understand much of what is in the Bible better.

In addition, the audio CD “Der Schlunz - das Musical” was released in 2016, which takes up individual stories from the series, but reworks them and adds further anecdotes and stories to compose them in the form of a musical.
Comic
A Schlunz comic has been published monthly in the children's magazine “Kläx” since April 2009. In August 2011 the comics appeared as a compilation in a separate issue. This contains 15 of the more than 20 three-page individual comics. In January 2013 a second volume was published, also with 15 comics under the title "Sorry, Frau Rosenbaum!".
filming
The film adaptation, produced from 2010 to 2012 under the title “Der Schlunz - The Series”, is based on the plot of the books, but mostly tells independent stories. The television series is the first Christian television series to be produced in Germany. The project, to which the Bibles Association , Christian Media Foundation (SCM) and the TV station ERF eins have joined forces, is partly financed by donations.
The Austrian director Rainer Hackstock , who also wrote the scripts together with Harry Voss, directed the film. The producer is Wolf-Dieter Kretschmer from ERF Medien. After several castings for amateur actors in March and April 2010, several professional film and theater actors were also hired, including Michael Gahr and Philip Wiegratz . The cameraman was Andreas Amsüss. Mirjam Schepik was responsible for the editing, which lasted from July to September 2010 for the first season.
The complete series will appear on DVD and will be broadcast on ERF eins. Over 125,000 DVDs of the series have now been sold. According to the ERF, the project is in talks with broadcasters such as Super RTL and KI.KA about a possible broadcast. In the meantime, attempts are also being made to sell the series in English under the title "Scruff - The Series". According to producer Wolf-Dieter Kretschmer, there will only be a continuation of the series if the broadcasting rights of the series can be sold to other broadcasters, as one is dependent on these financial resources.
consequences
Building the episodes
The plot and characters of the books form the basis of the television episodes. However, new stories are told about the Schlunz . The episodes are self-contained, 25-minute, cheerful stories about a biblical core, which is formed by the Bible stories told by Adelheid in the children's church service . The subsequent actions by Schlunz and Lukas are a metaphor that is intended to retell this story in an emotional way.

Filming
In the summer of 2010, five episodes of the television series were shot in five weeks in Wetzlar ( Hessen ).
The costs for the first season were 370,000 euros.
In July 2011 filming began for three more episodes of the series, followed by two more in October. The second season should also cost less than 500,000 euros.
Locations
The series is mainly shot in Volpertshausen near Wetzlar . The house of the Schmidtsteiner family is represented by a residential building on Christiane-Vulpius-Straße, all interior shots for the series are also shot in Volpertshausen. Other locations are the old town of Wetzlar, the Colchesteranlage and the Lahninsel car park, the Dutenhofener See and several places in the area. For example, the “Meggis Farm” horse farm in Eibelshausen and Schönbach was filmed. For a more unusual episode, the film team shot two days in Lingelbach's western town "Lingelcreek", after which they first moved to Herborn . Another episode was filmed at Braunfels Castle .
Awards
In December 2011, the fourth episode of Der Schlunz - the series , Lukas haut ab received the Christian film prize “David”, endowed with 1,000 euros, in the “Children's and Youth Film” category. The Forum for Christians in Film and Television (CFF) awarded the prize on the basis of the acting achievements of the child actors as well as the “excellent directorial work”. As a result, a biblical topic is reinterpreted in an entertaining way and placed in the children's world of experience. This is how Christian values are conveyed and young viewers are entertained. The Schlunz is setting new standards for Christian film in Germany. It captivates with its high quality and the playful, child-friendly teaching of biblical topics.
