The long way to light is a German documentary from 2006 by director Douglas Wolfsperger .

content

The film reports on the midwife Edeltraud Hertel, who has been accompanying women before, during and after the birth in Meerane , near Chemnitz , for almost 20 years . Various social problems are highlighted, such as the drop in the birth rate or the emigration from the provinces. Both midwives and clinicians have their say to explain the different possibilities of childbirth. There are also differences of opinion between the groups as to which method is the better. Home birth , birth in a birthing center or hospital, natural birth or cesarean section , the future parents or mothers spoiled for choice. In addition, there is competition between hospitals in the region in the former GDR.

But no matter how the birth now takes place , there is no getting around the fact that the baby has to force its way through the birth canal to see the light of day. This is no different in the so-called advanced western world than in Africa . Edeltraud Hertel works today in both worlds, Europe and Africa; and the film shows that the differences at birth are not that great. The women on the black continent also give birth to their children horizontally, although today we know that this is not necessarily the most favorable position from a medical point of view. The documentation not only shows the technical aspects of childbirth, but also reports on ethical issues relating to abortion , the handicap of babies and stillbirths . Midwives, doctors, mothers, fathers and children all have their say in order to be able to view the topics from different perspectives.

Reviews

In the ZDF program ML Mona Lisa , the documentation was described as impressive.

The TZ Munich of February 28, 2008 writes: “A lot of top-class people come together: Douglas Wolfsperger, who introduced us to the wonderful world of old Viennese film fans in 'Bellaria', Igor Luther directed the camera and the imaginative Gerd Baumann took care of it the music. That’s an exciting basic constellation for a documentary film ”.
