The Black Panther von Ratana is a German-Italian adventure film from 1962 by Jürgen Roland with Heinz Drache and Marianne Koch in the leading roles.

action

Two Thai crooks, led by the American Larry Finch, break a valuable gem from the head of a Buddha figure standing in the temple in front of the monks present. There is a firefight, the Thai thieves are caught by the monks, while the foreigner escapes with the help of his Western accomplice waiting in the vehicle. This is how the story begins of an eerie, black big cat that terrifies the village of Ratana on the edge of the jungle.

In Bangkok, the German chief engineer Paddberg is informed by his client, the Anglo-Thai Company, that he wants to acquire a tin mine and that Paddberg should prepare an appraisal beforehand. Meanwhile, mine owner Tschang has trouble with his constantly drunk demolition manager: it is the diamond robber Finch, of all people, who works there alongside his friend Jack Roller. Ultimately, Finch is killed by the panther, and Roller is the beneficiary. When engineer Paddberg arrives on site, he quickly gets caught up in the maelstrom of eerie events surrounding the black panther, which is said to be raging. There have already been several victims: after Mr. Tschang, the last owner of the Ratana tin mine, the Malaye Monk, the Chinese Liu Ling and his wife also die. But are these really accidents or is it not rather the plan of a murderer behind the mask of a big cat?

Paddberg wants to get to the bottom of the strange occurrences and gets help from the doctor Dr. Keller, who soon also falls into the crosshairs of a sinister murderer. It soon turns out that the murderous hustle and bustle of the black panther of Ratana is closely related to the criminals and temple robbers shown at the beginning. Behind these staged "accidents" is Jack Roller, who bit by bit tore the whole mine under the nail. Paddberg soon realizes that this unscrupulous man must be the key to solving the puzzling case. There are more robberies, fights and exchanges of fire before Paddberg, with the help of a policewoman pretending to be a dancer named Yvonne, can finally eliminate the villain by means of a powerful jet of water.

Production notes

The black panther of Ratana was filmed in Thailand (Bangkok and in nature) in 1962 and passed the FSK test on March 7, 1963. The world premiere was on March 15, 1963.

Ludwig Spitaler was in charge of production. The buildings were designed by Hans Berthel . Willi Schwadorf was responsible for the sound. The American Brad Harris was at the beginning of his German action film career in The Black Panther von Ratana and for once played a crook here. As is usually the case in his “German phase”, it is dubbed by Heinz Engelmann . Rosemarie Fendel speaks to Luciana Gilli, the dancer who finally turns out to be a police officer.

Reviews

"More emphasis is placed on external tension than on internal credibility."

- Films 1962–64, Handbook VII of the Catholic Film Critics, p. 149. Düsseldorf 1965

Paimann's film lists summed up: "As is usually the case with German productions filmed abroad, the outdoor shots, which are worth seeing in themselves, are accounted for by the action, which only with difficulty asserts itself between the folkloric passages and leaves the participants little opportunity to play."

"Incredible and dynamic crime and adventure film in the exotic landscape of Thailand."

"The exotic film set can hardly hide the impetus of the production."
