A gynecologist is suing is a German medical drama from 1964 by Falk Harnack with Dieter Borsche in the title role.

action

Dr. As the chief physician of a district hospital, Hans Thomas is particularly admired by his female patients. After the death of his wife he withdrew privately and concentrates all his energy exclusively on his job, which he fulfills with body and soul. Again and again he is confronted with the problem of sterilization and so he has gained some experience from related interventions. An unhappy borderline situation arises when a patient, Lotte Hartmann, goes through a change of heart and changes her mind too late ...

Thomas' far less successful colleague, Senior Physician Dr. Kraus, then blackened his superiors out of envy and resentment with an ambitious journalist and a career-conscious public prosecutor: Dr. Thomas is said to have performed a tube ligation , the tying of the fallopian tubes, without the consent of the patient Hartmann concerned . Then Dr. Thomas made the trial, where the responsible and passionate doctor takes his clear positions with verve and makes a passionate plea against the legal prohibition of sterilization. His patients hold by him, the senior doctor holds against it. Hans Thomas is sentenced to a suspended prison sentence, but announces an appeal.

Production notes

The film is based on real events surrounding a trial against the surgeon Axel Dohrn, who is said to have sterilized 1,390 women.

A gynecologist complains was filmed from March 4 to April 9, 1964 in the CCC studios in Berlin-Spandau . The film passed the FSK exam on May 27, 1964 and was premiered on June 5, 1964 in the Mohren Theater in Munich.

Heinz Willeg was in charge of production, Heinz Götze was in charge of production. The buildings were designed by Hans-Jürgen Kiebach and Ernst Schomer , the costumes were designed by Trude Ulrich . Gerhard Müller was responsible for the sound.

For Inge Meysel , who played a head sister, this was the last movie immediately before her (late) breakthrough as a television star in the mid-1960s.

Reviews

"Gynecologist Dr. Dohrn would have reason to complain: The film that was won from his case (script: Janne Furch; director: Falk Harnack) is not only artistically undiscussable, he is also giddy with strange plot constructions on the crucial question - tubal ligation only for medical or also for ethical indication? - past. Doctor Dieter Borsche, the whitest coat in Germany, only takes a clear stance towards Playgirls: They should remain fertile. "

- The mirror . Issue 27/1964, v. July 1, 1964

Paimann's film lists summed up: "What was one-sided in the statement on the problem, but popular because of the detailed description of the clinical milieu, for whose characters memorable actors were assigned".

"The artistically indisputable film, which coincided with the beginning discussion about criminal law reform, polemizes emotionally skilfully (and based on an authentic case) against the criminality of sterilization."
