The Arkansas White Devil (Ride a Crooked Trail) is an American western from 1958. Walter Matthau played the lead role of Judge Kyle, and Jesse Hibbs directed. The film was shown for the first time in the German-speaking area on the day before Christmas Eve 1958.

action

The crook Joe Maybe fails with a bank robbery. When on his flight he sees that the marshal who is chasing him will not survive a fall from his horse, he appropriates the marshal star and horse. In Little Rock he is recognized by the local, drinking-loving judge Kyle as the wanted bank robber, but thanks to the star he is ultimately mistaken for the legendary Marshal Noonan. In order to save his own skin, the bank robber assumes his new identity and lets the judge persuade him to take over the vacated position of marshal, even though he wanted to rob the bank in this city too. When his accomplice Sam Teeler arrives, Maybe can take his booty from him and hand it over to the judge. He also finds the love of his life in his ex-girlfriend Tessa. He has found pleasure in his new role and now wants to continue to fill it.

criticism

Joe Hembus found the film "brilliantly written by Borden Chase and routinely turned off by Jesse Hibbs" and "as exciting as it is funny". The lexicon of international film , on the other hand, saw a "reasonably exciting Western with noticeable restraint in the fight and shooting scenes and some joke from Walter Matthau's appearances as a drunken judge." Hal Erickson considers the work to be above average; He also certified Matthau that he was stealing the film in his role.
