Bob Steele
Bob Steele (born January 23, 1907 in Portland , Oregon , † December 21, 1988 in Burbank , California ), actually Robert Adrian Bradbury , was an American actor .
Life
Steele was born into a vaudeville family. In the late 1910s, the family settled in Hollywood , where his father Robert N. Bradbury later worked as a film director and screenwriter . He attended Glendale High School and was a classmate of John Wayne's . Steele appeared in several of his father's films as a child actor in the 1920s. In 1927 he got a film contract with the silent film - film production company Film Booking Offices of America and played under the stage name Bob Steele in numerous B-Movie - Western . He had one of his few roles in major film productions in 1939 in Von Mäusen und Menschen based on the novel by John Steinbeck .
Until the early 1940s he played alongside Al St. John the role of Billy the Kid in the Fuzzy film series, which was later broadcast in Germany under the name Western von Yesterday . After that he mainly played supporting roles, including in Howard Hawks ' Dead Sleeping Firmly . He was also seen in six films by his former classmate John Wayne between 1953 and 1970, including Rio Bravo and Rio Lobo . He also appeared in television series from the mid-1950s , including the western series Maverick , A Thousand Miles of Dust and Smoking Colts . It seldom appeared outside of the western genre, exceptions to this were, for example, the science fiction film Hell is loose on U-17 and the war film The Longest Day . Between 1965 and 1967 he played the trooper Duffy on the side of Forrest Tucker in 63 episodes of the western series F Troop . In 1968, he played one of the men of the lynch mob that Clint Eastwood at the beginning of Hang 'Em High hanged. He had his last film appearance in a minor supporting role not mentioned in the credits in Don Siegel's thriller The Great Coup , after which he retired from show business.
Steele was married three times and had no children.
