Detlef Müller (born September 5, 1960 in Döbeln ) is a former German soccer player.

Athletic career

Detlef Müller started playing organized football at BSG Motor Döbeln in his hometown of Döbeln when he was seven . At the age of 14 he attended the children's and youth sports school in Leipzig for three years. He then returned to Döbeln and completed an apprenticeship as a toolmaker there . As a 17-year-old Müller played in the Döbelner men's team, most recently in the third-class Leipzig district league . In the meantime he had played from 1974 to 1977 in the youth and junior team of 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig .

In the spring of 1980, the 1.80 m tall regular defender moved to BSG Chemie Böhlen , who was playing in the second-rate GDR league that year . In 1980 his new team made it to the GDR league , but was only able to hold onto the top class for one season. After another year in the GDR league, Detlef Müller rose again in 1982 with chemistry in the league, only to have to be relegated again after a year. When Böhlen missed promotion twice in a row, Müller moved to the upper division BSG Stahl Riesa in 1985 . After he had only played 12 league games in Böhlen, he became a regular player in his first year in Riesa with 22 appearances. In Riesa, Müller played a total of three years and made 71 league appearances.

When Stahl Riesa had to relegate after the 1987/88 season, Müller joined the upper division club FC Karl-Marx-Stadt . It was here that he experienced his most successful period and was named captain of the “Himmelblauen” team. In his first year he was third with the FCK Oberliga, 1990 runner-up. On April 1, 1989, he was a midfielder in the final of the GDR soccer cup , which was lost 1-0 to the East German series champions BFC Dynamo . Thanks to his good placements, FCK qualified for the UEFA Cup in 1989 and 1990 , which meant that Müller made eight international appearances against Juventus Turin , Borussia Dortmund , Boavista Porto and FC Sion . When Müller left the team, which was now playing as Chemnitzer FC, in 1991, he had played 54 league games there. In the GDR league, which has now become history, Müller was used in a total of 150 games.

In early 1991, Müller then moved to VfB Leipzig , for whom he played 13 games in the NOFV Oberliga and in the 1992 season eleven games in the 2nd Bundesliga . He then played one more season in the Oberliga Nordost for FC Wismut Aue , later he returned to his hometown and let his career fade away at Döbelner SC.
