German Colonial Association (1882)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The German Colonial Association was one of the organizations that were counted among the colonial societies.

The association was founded on December 6, 1882 in Frankfurt am Main under the direction of Hermann Fürst zu Hohenlohe-Langenburg , who also became the first president. In February 1885 the seat moved to Berlin . The club had around 15,000 members. Most of them came from politics, industry, trade and banking. The motives combined nationalist rivalry with other great powers, concern about overpopulation and hope for economic growth with speculation on domestic political détente in the struggle against social democracy. Decisive part in the creation of the association:

The association tried to arouse the interest of the Germans in colonial policy through journalism and to press the government and the Reichstag into colonial annexations. In the "colonial elections" of 1884 he saw himself on the road to success, after which the colonial fever initially subsided again. The members of the colonial association demanded economic support for the existing colonies and the development of new colonial areas.

On December 19, 1887, the association was merged with the Society for German Colonization founded by Carl Peters in 1884 to form the German Colonial Society . The organ of the association was the Deutsche Kolonialzeitung , which was founded in 1884 and sent weekly to members free of charge.
