Houses in Diana

geography

Diana is about 7.5 kilometers south of Rozvadov in the forest on a semicircular cleared area. The Diana Hunting Lodge is located in a large park, on the northern border of which 20 to 30 buildings are scattered across the forest clearing.

Diana (German: Dianahof) , part of the municipality of Rybník nad Radbuzou ( Domažlice district ) , must not be confused with Diana of the same name, 21 kilometers further south . Both hunting lodges are located near the German-Czech border and are called Diana in Czech after the goddess of the hunt , only the German name differs. While the Dianaberg hunting lodge is a magnificent building in a small village, only a few crumbling remains of the wall of Dianahof near Rybník nad Radbuzou have been preserved, located in the middle of an uninhabited area. Both objects are under Czech monument protection:

  • Diana near Rozvadov with the monument number (číslo rejstříku) ÚSKP: 41888 / 4-1887
  • Diana near Rybník nad Radbuzou with the monument number (číslo rejstříku) ÚSKP: 29252 / 4-5179

history

The Diana Hunting Lodge was first mentioned in writing in 1742. At that time it had been the residence of the Lords of Kolowrat for decades . In 1675 the Kolowrat family came to the Přimda Castle area . Jan Václav Novohradský von Kolowrat (1638–1690) was the owner of the Velké Dvorce estate and bought the Přimda estate along with the old Přimda castle. His son František Zdeňek (1659–1716) and his grandson František Václav (1689–1738) had the Diana hunting lodge built and moved their residence there.

Diana Hunting Lodge was built in the first half of the 18th century. Plans by the Bohemian architect Jan Blažej Santini were used to build the hunting lodge .

The hunting lodge Diana was successively owned by

  • Count František Antonín (1778–1861), member of the Kolowrat-Libštejnský branch
  • Jan Nepomuk Karel, called Hanuš (1794–1872), member of the Kolowrat-Krakowský branch from Březno
  • Leopold Kolowrat-Krakowský (1852–1910) and his descendants until 1943

In 1943 ownership of the castle was transferred to the German Empire . After the end of the Second World War in 1945, the castle was returned to Count Jindřich Kolowrat-Krakowský. When Czechoslovakia became communist after the February coup in 1948, the Diana hunting lodge was expropriated, nationalized and, from 1960, used as a retirement home.

In 1992 the hunting lodge was returned to its owner, Count Jindřich Kolowrat-Krakowský, who was now over ninety years old. Today (2014) the hunting lodge is being restored under the direction of Dominika Kolowrat-Krakowská.

The settlement near the castle, the surrounding region of the Kolowrat forests and the hunting grounds with a wildlife park and mouflon breeding area also bear the name Diana.

architecture

The hunting lodge has the shape of a rectangle about 120 meters long and 20 meters wide. It stretches from northwest to southeast on the top of a hill in the middle of a park about 200 meters in diameter. In the middle of the rectangle is a 20 by 20 meter baroque pavilion with the plan of an isosceles cross. On its upper floor there are wall paintings by Dutch masters and frescoes with scenes from the life of the goddess Diana. It is crowned by a dome on which there is a metal statue of a seated deer. Two covered stone bridges lead from the central pavilion to the left and right to the side wings, which consist of buildings about 20 by 20 meters. The whole building is currently (2014) being restored.
