Christian Ludwig Bokelmann (born February 4, 1844 in St. Jürgen (Lilienthal) near Bremen , †  April 14, 1894 in Berlin ) was a German genre and portrait painter of realism and naturalism in the tradition of the Düsseldorf School .

Career

Christian Ludwig Bokelmann, son of a teacher and organist from St. Jürgen, learned the trade of a businessman in Lüneburg and Hamburg-Harburg at the request of his parents . It was not until 1868, after the death of his father, that he was able to study - following his inclination and the advice of a Hamburg painter - at the Düsseldorf Art Academy under Ludwig Knaus and from 1871 in Wilhelm Sohn's private studio . In 1873 he exhibited at the Vienna World Exhibition , since 1874 at the Berlin Academy Exhibition , in 1878 at the Paris World Exhibition , and in Brussels in 1881 . In 1877 he won a gold medal at an exhibition in Ghent . In the 1880s, following an ethnographic interest that the Düsseldorf School had cultivated since Rudolf Jordan , he undertook an extensive study trip through the marshes and North Friesland . In 1883 he visits Sylt for the first time . The artists' colony of Katwijk he sought. During this time, Bokelmann increasingly pursued nature studies and outdoor painting . After several stays in North Friesland and on the island of Föhr, he increasingly turned to traditional folk life. From 1892 to 1893, Bokelmann worked as a professor of genre painting at the Karlsruhe Art Academy . In 1893 he accepted a call to the University of Fine Arts in Berlin-Charlottenburg. Fritz Mackensen , who had met Bokelmann through Emilie Stolte, accompanied him in both positions as his master student and friend. Bokelmann was also friends with the Low German poet Klaus Groth . Bokelmann was a member of the Düsseldorfer Künstlerverein Malkasten and the Prussian Academy of the Arts , Section for the Fine Arts, Berlin (1894). He tragically died when he fell from a ladder in his Charlottenburg studio while trying to hang up a laurel wreath that grateful students had given him on his 50th birthday. Bokelmann was buried in the old cemetery in Hamburg-Harburg .

Art historical appreciation

The art connoisseur , 1879
  • Adolf Rosenberg , a contemporary of Bokelmann, classified him in 1890 as a representative of realism and naturalism and found that he, the “cold-blooded master of incorruptible observation”, was “the first Düsseldorf genre painter who was up to [the] artistic challenges of a new era showed ”.
  • In Bokelmann's later work, “serious pictorial themes with socially critical echoes” dominate; he overcame the studio tone and found a “richly nuanced room painting” ( Wend von Kalnein ).
  • His work represents a “turning towards the social 'modern moral image' that reflects the economic crises of the early days ” (Bettina Baumgärtel).
