Dick's Picks Volume 14 is a live quadruple album by the band Grateful Dead .
history
The songs on the album were recorded on November 30 and December 2, 1973 at the Boston Music Hall in Boston , Massachusetts , and released in June 1999 with their own label, Grateful Dead Records .
Grateful Dead performed 14 times in the Boston Music Hall, including three times in 1973 alone. These three concerts took place in a row from November 30th to December 2nd, two of which were used for the album.
Shortly before that, the studio album Wake of the Flood was released , from which several songs were used with Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodleloo , Stella Blue , Here Comes Sunshine , Eyes of the World and Weather Report Suite . The song Dark Star Jam was last played on December 5, 1971. From the following studio album Grateful Dead from the Mars Hotel (1974) there was no song on the setlist.
Instead of using a complete concert this time, different songs from the two evenings were selected and put together so that songs from both evenings could be heard alternately, but songs from the same evening were also used one after the other. 13 songs are from November 30th and 14 from December 2nd.
Donna Godchaux did not appear at the concert due to her pregnancy. In contrast to Dick's Picks Volume 1 , however, it is not listed in the credits (as a giving birth ).
The name Dick's Pick comes from the official recording archivist of the band Dick Latvala , who started the series and selected the songs for it until his death in 1999. Dick's Picks Volume 14 was the last album to be released during his lifetime. From Dick's Picks Volume 17 , the series was continued by David Lemieux.
Like the previous albums in the Dick's Pick series, this one also has a caveat emptor warning:
" This release was digitally mastered directly from the original half track 7.5 ips analog tape. It is a snapshot of history, not a modern professional recording, and may therefore exhibit some minor technical anomalies and the unavoidable effects of the ravages of time. "

In general, Dick's Picks Volume 12 received average ratings. The album received 3 stars out of 5 from All Music Guide and 4 out of 5 stars from The Music Box .
