Dick's Picks Volume 18 is a Live - triple album of the band Grateful Dead .

history

The songs on the album were recorded between February 3 and 5, 1978 at Dane County Coliseum in Madison , Wisconsin , and the UNI Dome in Cedar Falls , Iowa . Two songs are from a show at the Milwaukee Auditorium in Milwaukee , Wisconsin.

The Grateful Dead have performed six times during their career at the Dane County Coliseum, twice at the UNI Dome and once at the Milwaukee Auditorium. In 1978 they completed 82 official shows. The producer was Betty Cantor-Jackson, who produced several albums over the years, not only for Grateful Dead, but also for musicians like Boz Scaggs .

The last studio album was Terrapin Station (1977), which reached gold status in the United States in 1987. From this album, the songs "Estimated Prophet", "Passenger" and " Samson and Delilah " were used for the live shows. From the later studio album Shakedown Street (1978) the classics "Good Lovin", "Fire on the Mountain" and "New Minglewood Blues" were used. The other songs were standard live songs from older albums and also from other songwriters.

The name Dick's Pick comes from the official recording archivist of the band Dick Latvala , who started the series and selected the songs for it until his death in 1999. Then David Lemieux took over the archive. As a reminder, the words “Latvala” are always hidden on the cover or inlay of an album from the series.

Like the previous albums in the Dick's Pick series , this one also comes with a purchase warning :

" This CD was produced using the original 7" reel-to-reel soundboard tapes running at 7.5 IPS and 15 IPS. It is a snapshot of history and not a modern professional recording, and may therefore exhibit some minor technical anomalies. We have, however, aimed to make it just exactly perfect, as Dick would have liked it. "

criticism

In general, Dick's Picks Volume 18 was rated differently. The album received 3 stars from All Music Guide and 5 stars from The Music Box .
