Dick's Picks Volume 8 is a Live - triple album of the band Grateful Dead .

history

The songs from the album were recorded on May 2, 1970 in Binghamton University in Binghamton , New York , and released on June 2, 1997 with their own label Grateful Dead Records .

As with most of the Dick's Picks series albums , concert material from the 1970s was used. With Dick's Picks Volume 8 , a complete concert is played again, whereby the first set (reproduced on the first CD) is purely acoustic.

In terms of time, the concert took place between the two studio albums Aoxomoxoa (1969) and Workingman's Dead (1970). In the meantime, the live album Live / Dead (1969) was released. From Aoxomoxoa the songs were St. Stephen and Cosmic Charlie used. Like Live / Dead , Dick's Picks Volume 8 And We Bid You Goodnight (by Sarah Doudney) is also included. The later classic Uncle John's Band was used by Workingman's Dead , and the songs Dire Wolf , Cumberland Blues , Black Peter and Casey Jones were practiced and tested live. Workingman's Dead was already recorded at this point, although it wasn't released until months later. At this concert, the Deadheads could for the first time the song Friend of the Devil , which was later released on the album American Beauty (November 1970).

At the concert, the Deads were supported by The New Riders of the Purple Sage members David Nelson and John Dawson , who, however, largely remain in the background.

What is striking about this concert / album is that the Deads involve the concert-goers in the show, joke with them and also go into their midst or bring visitors onto the stage.

The name Dick's Pick comes from the official recording archivist of the band Dick Latvala , who started the series and selected the songs for it until his death in 1999.

Like the previous albums in the Dick's Pick series, this one also has a caveat emptor warning:

" These compact discs were mastered directly from the original half track 7.5 ips analog tapes recorded at this show. The acoustic set was recorded in stereo. The electric sets were monaural. While the reason for this remains a mystery, spurious electrical activity is suspected. "
