action

Three girls live in Liisa's apartment: Lulu, Tenu and Liisa themselves. They study and have fun with some of their fellow students at the May 1st celebrations and swimming in the sea. In between, they rehearse at the "Lapua Opera" together with other students. The games are gradually getting serious: Petteri wins Liisa's affection - and Tenu expects a child from Hessu. From their problem is a short lecture about world population and birth control. The fat Nipa and Alpu with the glasses, however, have no luck with the blonde Lulu.

The summer is passing. The piece is performed. The brutalities of the Finnish right-wing extremists, the so-called Lapua Movement , depicted in the opera, accentuated by images of Hitler, refer to the horrors of war and mercenaries. In Liisa's words, the film becomes an appeal to the audience: "You talk and talk, but what is the use of talking?"

Hessu and Tenu have taken an apartment together, and Liisa is loved by persistent Petteri. But shadows fall on love and play: Vietnam war, horror in Africa, march of the opponents of atomic bombs. Again and again the harsh present breaks into the world of young people.

annotation

Initially, the film was only supposed to be the recording of "Lapua Opera" for Finnish television, a historical reminiscence of the rural and right-wing extremist Lapua movement, named after the city of the same name in which it was created, but then it became a double love story a bit of history and social criticism - a mixture of private experience and commitment.

Awards

In 1968 Mikko Niskanen won the Finnish film award " Jussi " in the category "Best Director". Kristiina Halkola received the “ Jussi ” in the “Best Actor” category.

Reviews

The Protestant film observer judged after the first broadcast of the work on ZDF: “In his strip, Mikko Niskanen cleverly combines the recording of a television opera about the right-wing extremist 'Lapua' movement with the personal fates of some young students who take part in the opera . Despite the handicap of the subtitles, some of which are difficult to read on the screen, the film leaves such a strong impression that it should be recommended for dubbing and therefore to a larger audience. ”The lexicon of international film judges less favorably :“ A portrait of Finnish students from the 68s Generation that alternates undecided between political analysis and the entertaining discussion of problems.
