action
20-year-old Rose Halshford moves to Chicago with her father Jerry after her schizophrenic mother Sophia committed suicide a few months earlier. Jerry, who works as an architect, wants to help his daughter with the change of location to deal with the loss. But Rose, who interrupted her studies at Stanford for a semester, did not feel at home in the hundred-year-old house from the start. When she speaks to Leila Markby, who is about the same age, in front of the house next door, her impression that her new home is scary is reinforced. Leila's father Howard is also acting strange. After a restless night, Rose is surprised the next morning by the young handyman Noah Henry, whom Jerry hired to renovate the house. She gradually becomes friends with Noah and at the same time investigates the secret of the house.
Rose keeps hearing eerie noises. She finds a chain, a doll's head and clues to a Rachel who probably once lived in the house. Noah explains to her that a few days before she moved in, he saw that the windows in her room were covered with boards and the door was secured with a lock. Jerry is skeptical of his daughter's fear and believes that the stress of her mother's death has made her all imaginary.
Rose continues researching anyway and finds reports about the previous occupants of the house. Cheri Garrison and her son Marcus took in the drug addict Rachel Winacott, who then disappeared without a trace. Howard was believed to be the prime suspect in the case, but was acquitted for allegedly running away from Rachel. He explains that to Rose again personally. Noah invites Rose to a pool party to take her mind off her worries. Leila disappears the same evening.
Rose gets a copy of the house's blueprints from the archives. When she tries to deal with it, however, she suffers a fit of faintness that shows symptoms of drug abuse. After recovering, Noah mentions the word "wall in" in a message, which is why Rose searches for a hidden room. She actually finds such a room and meets Marcus Garrison in it. This forces her to put on Rachel's dress and wants to rape her. Rose is able to free herself first and discovers Leila who is tied up on the run. Jerry has just got home from work. While trying to help his daughter, he is knocked down by Marcus, but at the same time Rose stabs Marcus with a knife in the stomach.
After the horror ends, Rose moves again with her father and continues her studies at Northwestern University . However, she cannot forget Marcus.
