The Origin of the Night is the tenth studio album by the Hamburg band Die Goldenen Zitronen . It was released on October 16, 2009 by the Hamburg record label Buback Tonträger , four years after the last album Lenin .

Music and lyrics

The music on “The Origin of the Night” was described by many critics as krautrock-like and electronic, which is another change in style for the band. It was also consistently only worked with electronic drums or analog synthesizers instead of real drums and rare or punk-untypical instruments such as fan organ, prepared piano, bongos, flutes or double bass were built into the music.

The lyrics, written by Ted Gaier and Schorsch Cameroon , deal with political issues again this time, mostly in metaphorical and complex language. What is new, however, is that the lemons also deal with more private topics for the first time, for example a failed relationship in the first track "Zeitschleifen". Further topics are the financial crisis and recession in 2009, the death of the right-wing populist politician Jörg Haider , self-realization on social networks like MySpace or a criticism of the security disposition , as it is negotiated in songs by bands like Silbermond .

The cover of the album is - as is so often the case with albums of the Goldene Zitronen - a painting by the Hamburg painter Daniel Richter . The song “Just because I freeze” comes from the pen of the singer Schorsch Cameroon, who already performed the song as part of his award-winning radio play “An image of man that is zero in its sum” (2006).

Music videos were shot for the songs The Origin of the Night and Positions . The directors were Schorsch Cameroon ( Positions ) and Ted Gaier ( The Origin of the Night ). The video on positions was rated with one out of ten points in spex .

reception

Matthias Manthe from laut.de gives the album five out of five points and writes: “In the past, the lemons always relied on reflection [sic!] And rebellion against the situation, now they are taking the first step towards overcoming it . It remains to be hoped that the latest work of this most important German punk band will soon be followed by the associated discourse. "

Oliver Ding writes on the website plattentests.de : “The tenth album by the band, whose funpunk time not only looks decades ago, but actually is ago, does not claim opinion leadership for itself, but the gray cells of its listeners. 'The Origin of the Night' does not show solidarity with the remote fundamental opposition. The future perspective does not lie in constant protest, but in idleness. This is because it is the first to offer the space in which creativity can unfold and lead to the necessary avant-garde. That reconciles 1968 with the findings from 1977, 1989 and Post-9/11. That's why Die Goldenen Zitronen are still the most important punk band in this country. ”Ding gave the record 7 out of 10 possible points.

The youth radio on3 from Bayerischer Rundfunk named the album “Album of the Week” and wrote: “Radical, rebellious and brilliant from front to back: A record full of subversive wit and relentless accuracy. Not a record with which to sound a champagne reception . "

The web radio byteFM also named the album album of the week and the alternative youth radio fm4 from ORF named the song Des Landeshauptmanns last way to song for Sunday .

The spex placed the album at number 2 on the 2009 annual album charts. Only the debut album by artist La Roux was rated higher. The readers voted the album at number 8. The song Bloss because I freeze came to number 6 on the spex annual reader charts.
