action

The seven-year-old girl Annette lives with her parents in a house in the mountains of French-speaking Switzerland , in Rossinière . On Christmas Eve 1900, Annette's mother died giving birth to her second child, a son. Since her father has to work a lot, Annette raises her brother Dany with the help of her aunt Martha. In the spring of 1906, after an argument between Annette and her best friend Lucien, a misfortune occurs: when Lucien and Dany meet near a ravine and begin to argue about an invitation to Annette's birthday, Lucien accidentally drops Dany's ermine into the depths. when he is bitten in the hand by this, and Dany rushes after trying to rescue him. With the news of Dany's death, Lucien returns to the village, where he and his mother visit Annette and her father to take them to the scene of the accident. Dany survives, but has a bad broken leg. The doctor diagnoses that the boy will likely never be able to walk without crutches again. Annette Lucien then announces the friendship.

Since his guilty conscience plagues him, Lucien Dany wants to give him a special gift and carves him Noah's ark and animals, which Annette intercepts at the door and throws it onto a pile of firewood. Dany has long since forgiven Lucien - especially after he was told about the origin of the ark. But his sister wants to prevent any contact between the two. Only when Lucien saves her life can he and Annette get closer again and finally save their friendship.

To make up for his guilt, Lucien risks his life in a snowstorm on the way over a mountain ridge to Montreux , where a famous doctor stayed in the hotel where his sister Marie also works. When Dr. Givette then comes to the Barnielle family in the small village and looks at Dany's leg, he promises a free operation. Now Dany comes to a clinic in Lausanne , while Annette, who accompanies her little brother to the big city, is allowed to live in the doctor's house. Dany's leg is finally broken again in the operating room and then heals without any problems. Grateful and happy, the siblings return to their family and friends in Rossinière.

4thIt remains unclear whether the masked man running through a snowstorm and denied entry into a house is actually supposed to represent Jesus, since Annette only interprets her dream, which relates to the pastor's Christmas sermon, to that effect.
5Wilhelm Tell appears in Dany's imagination in the form of his father, he sees himself as Tell's son Walter.
