The Art of Losing is a German short film from 2014 . The film was produced by the Baden-Württemberg Film Academy and Südwestrundfunk .
action
At the beginning of the film you can see boxer Christian Bender jogging. He takes care of his father, who is in need of care after a stroke . Maria, a friend of the family, is a nurse and helps Bender with the care.
When Christian's brother Michael returns one day from a military mission, Maria receives him and tells her about his father's condition. When Christian comes home, he initially ignores him because he felt abandoned by him. After a while he asks him to look after his father until he has had his great fight. Michael agrees and takes care of the care after a briefing.
While Christian is training all day, Michael and Maria get closer and they fall in love.
In the end the fight takes place, but Christian loses it. The last scene in the final scene shows the father in his bed.
production
The Art of Losing was director David Voss's diploma film for the Ludwigsburg Film Academy , which he shot together with film production student Holger Bergmann and cameraman Jan Prahl . Cottbus was the focus of the filming location because his mother-in-law was born there and her mother still lived there. The first step was to look for an apartment with a “GDR feeling”, which was ultimately found by chance through an acquaintance. Other locations were Kolkwitz and Hoyerswerda . The director met Laura-Maria Hänsel during a visit to the State Theater. Due to the limited budget for film school work, the film was mainly supported by friends and acquaintances.
An exclusive advance screening took place on July 20, 2014 in the Weltspiegelkino in Cottbus. The official premiere took place at the 2014 Hof Film Festival . The film was shown at several film festivals, in 2015 at the Filmschau Baden-Württemberg and at the Landshut Short Film Festival . On May 13, 2016, it ran for the first time on television on 3sat .
reception
The film was nominated for the German Short Film Award 2014 , but was defeated by Franziska Pflaum's So Schön wie du . The jury found the following words for the film:
“However, David Voss doesn't let the viewer sink into hopelessness, but allows him, like Christian, to remain confident. Is there a second chance for the brothers? Life is an art and that includes losing. Not to break with the blows in the neck that are held ready for us every day, to accept defeats and not to be among the winners - "The Art of Losing" tells about it in 29 minutes and wins our sympathy.
