The Passenger is a Polish feature film from 1963.

action

The German couple Liza and Walter take a ship across the Atlantic . They are a harmonious couple full of love and affection for one another, but know very little about their past. A woman joins them in a harbor, whom Liza looks very familiar. Memories from wartime come back to life. Liza was with the SS during the war and worked as a guard in the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp . The woman she is seeing again on the ship is Marta, who was a prisoner in Auschwitz. The film tells in flashbacks what happened in Auschwitz when Liza tortured Marta as a brutal guard. Liza was firmly convinced that Marta was no longer alive. In the present, she tells herself a seemingly unreal counter-story to the film's flashbacks.

background

Shooting of the film began in 1961. Andrzej Munk had just finished the flashback scenes in Auschwitz and had a fatal accident on his return to Warsaw by car. Only two years later did his closest colleague Witold Lesiewicz finish the film, which nevertheless seems more like a fragment of Munk's work. For the Polish actress Aleksandra Śląska it was the second time that she played a German concentration camp guard. As early as 1948 she played such a role in Wanda Jakubowska's Auschwitz drama The Last Stage .

The supervisor is modeled on Maria Mandl .

Reviews

“The cautiously haunting memory image is the last film by Andrzej Munk. After the director's fatal accident, the work was completed by Munk's employees. "

Awards

The film was shown at the Cannes Film Festival and the Venice Film Festival in 1964 . The film received the FIPRESCI award in Cannes . Andrzej Munk also received a special award from the jury for his complete work. In Venice he received the Italian Film Critics Prize.
