The Revenge of the Pharaohs is an Austrian adventure film made in 1924 by Hans Theyer .

action

Egypt, early 20th century. The British Egyptologist Lord Spencer has gathered on site with his small team to carry out archaeological excavations at royal tombs. Soon there were strong differences with nationalist, local circles. They are led by Hussein Kemal, who sees the strangers as intruders and cultural robbers. His party has long vowed to throw the "foreign devils" and "European thieves" out of the country.

In the fight against the British, he also likes drastic means. Kemal hands Leila, a native of him, a vial of poison so that she can pour a few drops into Lord Spencer's whiskey. Spencer's associate, George Harrison, was able to prevent the assassination attempt at the last moment; Leila dies in the ensuing fight. For the good end, Harrison and Lord Spencer's daughter Gladys become a couple.

Production notes

The Revenge of the Pharaohs was premiered on January 16, 1925 in Vienna . The five-act film was about 2,300 meters long and was banned from young people.

For the young up-and-coming actor Gustav Diessl , who embodies the villainous Hussein Kemal, this was his last Austrian film for the time being. In 1925, the year it was premiered, Diessl moved to Berlin. Hans Rouc created the film structures.

In Germany the film did not open until 1928 after several edits. He had the title Under the Spell of Blood here .

criticism

Vienna's Neue Freie Presse reported in its edition of January 20, 1925: “The Revenge of the Pharaohs” can be said to be an achievement worthy of recognition, at least with regard to the splendor of the pictures and their instructive value. Cairo, the deserts, the pyramids, Luxor, the Columns of Memnon and the Sphinx, the Valley of the Kings and the path into a millennia-old past that the spade of explorers, glowing with the fever of discovery, paves the way - all this gives impressions of grandiose intensity , Impressions for which the film and its creators deserve thanks. (...) The tasteful direction Hans Theyers, but also the presentation deserves all praise. "

In Paimann's film lists , where the film is falsely announced under the title The Vengeance of the Pharaoh , the following can be read: "The subject is certain of a certain interest due to the news about the excavation of the Egyptian royal tombs that went through the press not so long ago, as well as the rest quite exciting. The presentation is good, Gustav Dissl (sic!), Although a new release, it is remarkable. The presentation, especially in the historical subplot, is generous and successful. The photos are at the usual level. "
