A prisoner transport chugs from one prison to another through the French Maritime Alps . The inmate is the once notorious and ingenious safe cracker Stéphane Carella , who has withdrawn from the business and is looking forward to a peaceful retirement as he only has one year left to serve. The journey is then interrupted because another prisoner transport breaks down. Carella is chained to the passenger there, Paul Brandon , an unpredictable police murderer. How unpredictable Brandon is is shown in the inattentiveness of his guards, which Brandon uses to escape. Carella, who is connected to him, resists, but has no other chance and has to follow him helplessly. During the breakneck escape through the rugged mountain landscape, the duo can escape their pursuers and hide on the homestead of the widow Laura . Laura once lost her husband to a policeman's bullet, which is why she is ready to take in the fugitives.

After initial quarrels, the two opposing men understand each other better, whereupon Brandon Carella tries to persuade Carella to make a coup: a burglary in the well-secured Casino Mazetti in Nice on the Riviera . Carella - initially averse in view of his only relatively short sentence - finally agrees because he wants to prove his reputation once again on the burglar-proof safe. Together, the duo plans the break-in with the general staff, from staff practices to security options and evacuation in the escape vehicle. To do this, they pretend to want to check the casino's security systems and let the security chief show them everything.

Shortly thereafter, Carella is attacked by alleged henchmen of the Mafia and can only be saved by Brandon in the end. Although there was also shooting, Carella later discovers that the getaway car has no bullet holes. The pistol is loaded with blank cartridges . This leads Carella to the fact that Brandon must be an undercover cop, which he confirms. The escape was cleverly engineered by his boss Kovacs to win Carella's favor. The casino is actually just a cover for a local Mafia money laundering facility . Kovacs plans to ignite a gang war between the rival gangster groups through the coup and to take the crooks up in general. Carella was only supposed to serve Brandon as a front man and get six months reprieve - but surprisingly still declares herself willing to pull through the burglary.

Carella and Brandon managed to break into and steal several million francs with little difficulty . During the escape, they can escape Mazetti and his henchmen, who are then killed by their bread donors.

After the escape, Brandon wants to bring the money to Kovacs and sends Carella away because he wants to save him from jail. Carella then grabs a second bag of booty from the gangsters' vehicle and escapes. When meeting Kovacs, it turns out that Brandon's bag is only filled with paper. Laura had previously secretly parked the getaway car and deposited a false bag of loot, as she says that Brandon and Carella are actually a great team and should never part.

Carella has millions of loot, which is why Brandon digs him up in an open pit and presses for the money to be returned. In the end he lets Carella out of the building with the millions. However, the mafia is already waiting outside and wants the money. It turns out that Kovacs has also deceived Brandon and secretly made a deal with the Syndicate himself. At the last moment, Brandon comes to his friend's aid with a huge dump truck and together they take out the shooting mafia thugs. Brandon calls Kovacs and Kovacs tells him Carella should die while trying to escape. Then Brandon quits his job at Kovacs and drives off with Carella in the direction of Italy . In the end, Carella and Brandon sit on a freight train with the casino millions and roll together into a new life.
