background

The novel The Stars Look Down ( The Stars Look Down ) was the first literary world success of AJ Cronin. Just a few years after the book was published, Carol Reed began implementing it on film. Producer Isidore Goldsmith presented the giant for its time budget of 100,000 pounds available. This allowed a coal mine in Workington , Cumberland to serve as the original location for a week . Further filming was carried out at Twickenham Studios in London and at Shepperton Studios . Elaborate replicas of the mine in Workington and the mine workers' settlement provided the necessary local color.

Reviews

"Realistic film adaptation of a socially critical novel by AJ Cronin."

“Carol Reed managed to write an unpathetic, impressive, socially critical report here. The milieu is captured convincingly; Although the people involved represent positions that are determined by their origin and class, they always remain lively, individual people, whose fate is taken personally. "
