action

At a company party of the software company Pandora-Systems with the CEO Horst Linden and company president Elisabeth Lohmann, the completion of a new system for the Federal Ministry of the Interior (BMI), which was developed for the introduction of a new federal identity card , is celebrated. When suddenly the assassins shoot Elisabeth, her bodyguard is able to save her and take out the assassins. Kolvin is a former BND agent who was fired by his superior because he could not cope with the death of his BND colleague and fiancé Valerie during an operation.

Shortly thereafter, in an unnoticed moment, Elisabeth triggers the destruction of the so-called brain trust program in the central computer of the BMI via a transmitter hidden in her powder compact. In the meantime, Kolvin brings Elisabeth to her house. Since Elisabeth found out that Kolvin is single, she gives him the visiting card of her niece Hannah Lohmann, an editor of the computer magazine Giga-Magazin, with whom he is supposed to meet. Horst Linden and Andreas Bruckner are already expecting Elisabeth in their house. Their henchman Hartmann finally shoots Elisabeth. Kolvin had called her beforehand because he had forgotten to give her a powder compact back, but Elisabeth did not want it back, but told him to throw it away.

Kolvin called Hannah Lohmann on the same evening and met her at a reception in the Palais am Festungsgraben . At the meeting, however, he is not enthusiastic about her and looks for an excuse to end the date quickly. Katja, whom he has only just met, helps him with this. He didn't want the compact that he had given Hannah back from her and leaves the reception with Katja. Nikolaus and Katja spend a night of love together. The next morning, Katja turns out to be a BND agent who has been set on him. Katja demands the powder compact from him and after Kolvin gave her Hannah's business card, she shoots him. However, the shots are stopped by a thick book and he manages to escape. Katja remains close on his heels, however, because she knows his preferences and thoughts: Katja has implanted a probe that is connected to the thalamus and an electronic interface in her skull, called a brainpod. A chip was inserted into this brainpod on which Kolvin's brain data is stored.

Since Katja has Hannah's business card and it is therefore in danger, Kolvin drives to her publishing house. There it turns out that the actual Hannah Lohmann is a different one and that her colleague Elsi Winkel had accepted his call and went to the appointment. Kolvin escapes with Elsi, but both are arrested by the police shortly afterwards. The two are picked up at the police station by Andreas Bruckner, a high-ranking employee of the Interior Ministry who allegedly wants to bring them to safety. Bruckner now turns out to be Kolvin's former BND superior.

The Braintrust program was originally used to expose spies or double agents. After the secret project within the BND one now wants to scan all brains of the German citizens and thus the total surveillance of the citizens. This is all to be done under the guise of fighting crime and "national security". As part of the introduction of the new digital ID card, the brainwaves should also be secretly recorded while the photo is being taken.

When Katja is about to be switched off, Bruckner shoots his agent. However, because she was wearing a bulletproof vest, she was able to flee. Together with Kolvin and Elsi, they manage to destroy the BMI central computer and remove the chip in Katja's skull.
