The Weissenhofer: Carl, Keith & Bob

The Weissenhofer are a German artist group that consists of the artists Matthias Beckmann (alias Carl Weissenhofer), Jörg Mandernach (alias Keith Weissenhofer) and Uwe Schäfer (alias Bob Weissenhofer).

The artist group was founded in 1995 in Stuttgart . The founding members also included Thomas Raschke and Sebastian Rogler. Since its foundation, the Weissenhofer have been working on joint exhibitions, performances, installations, catalogs and moderated musical appearances.

The artist legend

With the Weissenhofers, the legend takes the place of the manifesto usual for groups of artists of the avant-garde . The Weissenhofer legend, which also forms the basis of his own song, humorously questions artist clichés that already play a role in Giorgio Vasari's artist servants ( Le vite dei più eccellenti architetti, pittori et scultori italiani , Florence 1550). After that, the Weissenhofer grew up in poor conditions on the Weissenhof in Wallistal. Allegedly, Bob and Keith Weissenhofer are biological brothers, while Carl was accepted as a foundling. By carving spoons and painting small wooden discs with Alpine motifs, they contributed to the family's upkeep from an early age. Because the economic situation became more and more difficult and the Weissenhof burned down one night, the Weissenhofers sought their luck in the New World. There they built up the Weissenhofer Ranch, further developed their house music and achieved their first successes as artists and musicians. When they knew their parents were well looked after, so the legend goes, they returned to the Old World, where they have since performed as the artist group “Die Weissenhofer”.

In their exhibitions, each of which is based on an overall concept and theme specially developed for the exhibition location, the Weissenhofer present, in addition to individual artistic works from the fields of painting, drawing and graphic art, primarily collective installations , videos , photographs and objects . Performances , slide shows and live rock music appearances are important components of their events, vernissages and action evenings. The continuous further development of the artist legend in a wide variety of media is a central theme of the artist group.

In 2002, the Weissenhofer group placed floating small sculptures in a pool, which they declared to be a pool of ideas for their exhibition "looppool" in the Albstadt gallery and the Erfurt art gallery . In 2003 they asked the visitors to the exhibition “Boards in the Golden Section” at the Brühler Kunstverein to bring boards that the Weissenhofers saw in the golden section . In 2005 they equipped a room-filling mobile with mementos of the rural origins of the Weissenhofers for the exhibition “mobile immobile” at the Mannheim Art Association : hay bales, tractor tires, plastic goose, model airplanes. At the festive event “10 Years of Die Weissenhofer” in 2005 in the Künstlerhaus Stuttgart , the Weissenhofer performed the performance “Computer Hacker Club”, in which they - literally taking the term “ hacker ” - destroyed several computers. For the exhibition “The Weissenhof is in Wallistal” in the Städtische Galerie Reutlingen, the Weissenhofers showed three architectural models for the reconstruction of the burned down Weissenhof in 2007 and published a picture book that contrasted the lines of the Weissenhoferlied with a colored illustration. When the SWR invited them to an exhibition in the same year, they used the opportunity to assign a slot to the Stuttgart artist Andreas Bär, who moderates the program “Bär on Air” on Freie Radio for Stuttgart. They put their own broadcasting car in front of the SWR broadcasting house and called their exhibition “The Weissenhof assign a broadcasting station”.
