occupation

The children's film The Green Cloud is a German fantasy film by the German director Claus Strigel from 2001. It was shot loosely based on the novel The Green Cloud by Alexander Sutherland Neill .

action

The children Don, Evi, Biene, Bernie, Mark, Golo, Jasmin and Romy are students in class 5c in a boarding school in Leuchtenberg . They are tired of hearing the boring and boastful stories of their teacher Pear Stalk, so he tells them a story in which he and the children are the last people in the world.

On a peaceful day, the American multimillionaire Mac Hoss appears with his pumpkin-shaped spaceship "Fun-Shuttle" and offers the children and pear stems a space trip. All of them fly with the spaceship over the earth and see that it is surrounded by a green cloud. When they land back on earth, they find everyone in the school petrified. After they have found out that all of humanity has been petrified, the children have a big party in a department store and can, for example, break the showcases, ride a motorcycle and steal sweets, even though the alarm systems sound. They can do what they want without being punished. But soon the children, Pear Stalk and Mac Hoss have to deal with wild zoo animals, mutated vegetables, a nasty child hater and dangerous gangsters.

criticism

“An overly unstructured free film adaptation of the classic children's book by AS Neill, which is characterized by an overflowing imagination, which undertakes a parforce ride through numerous genres that younger children are hardly able to follow. Even in the figure drawing, the film remains too superficial to be captivating. "

“Claus Strigel staged a reasonably entertaining, but very hard-working children's adventure that only appeals to a very young audience. Loosely based on the bestseller by Alexander Neill, a fantastic story emerged that is unrivaled in Germany, but which is clearly lacking in imagination. "

The German Film and Media Evaluation FBW in Wiesbaden awarded the film the title valuable.

Differences between book and film

The film is very vague about the book by Alexander Sutherland Neill.

  • The plot of the book takes place in England in 1938 and not, as in the film, in Germany today .
  • The names of the protagonists were changed in the film: Neill became Pear Stalk and Pyecraft Mac Hoss; the children were named Golo, Evi, Biene, Bernie, Jasmin, Enzo, Romy, Mark and Don.
  • In the book, Summerhill is the place where it all happens and not a boarding school in Leuchtenberg .
  • The airship became a pumpkin-shaped spaceship.
  • The character of Father Birn cannot be seen in the film.
  • The fight with the feral dogs was omitted.
  • The trip to Africa is not shown.
  • The figure of Lydia is missing from the book.

FSK clearance controversy

In the original version, the film was released from the age of 12. This sparked fierce criticism from experts at the Goldener Spatz children's film festival . The majority opinion of the experts is that the existing rules of the FSK, which date from 1951, urgently need to be overhauled. In view of the changed media literacy among children, the old rigid rules are outdated. In addition, the step between FSK 6 and FSK 12 is too big because it is precisely in this age range that there are major changes in children.
