The big and the small world is a German silent film love melodrama from 1921 by Max Mack with Charlotte Ander and Alfred Abel in the leading roles.

action

In the center of the action are two people of different social origins - one of them a representative of the "big" and the other one of the "small world" - with not dissimilar dreams of great love. On the one hand there is the little tie seamstress Franzi, who absolutely wants to get married richly in order to escape her poor, small existence and get to know the world of the beautiful and the rich. On the other side is a count who actually has everything and yet lacks so much: above all, great, sincere love. Both seekers meet one day, fall in love and become a couple. But Count Hart reveals nothing to his lady of the heart, Franzi Breitner, of his aristocratic origins; she thinks he is a commoner like herself, albeit a wealthy one. He fears that if his little tie seamstress knew about his social and financial background, this knowledge could spoil her character.

The calamity is approaching in the form of a former admirer Franzis, who traces the origin of her new lover and brings the truth to light. Soon it will be over with the homely love idyll in the modest suburban house, because Franzi begins to enjoy the "big world" of her heart-Count beyond measure, but does not know about the dangers on the parquet of the salons and in the Haute-Volee -Circles lurk. When one day a bon vivant with a cosmopolitan grand seigneur attitude tries to get her, Franzi is able to resist these advances. Nevertheless, she begins to see through the darker side of this world of glitter, glamor and dazzling and asks her now married Count Hart to be allowed to return home with her to her small, contemplative, but all the more honest world. Count Hart's love for his Franzi is so great that he fulfills her wish and turns his back on his big world forever.

Reviews

Paimann's film lists summed up: “The subject is structured very grippingly, the directors fortunately only hinted at the tendency towards the advantage of the mood of the picture and also avoided the danger of flipping over into the grotesque, which is contained in the descriptions of the milieu. In terms of portrayal, everyone deserves praise, especially Charlotte Perry (the young woman), who put a lot of intimacy and gentle understanding into her role, Alfred Abel (the count) was unfortunately a bit too passive. The photos in the outdoor shots were average, in the studio they were excellently lit, but often blurred. (A hit.) "
