The Last Years of Childhood is a German feature film from 1979. The film was based on a true story.
action
Martin Sonntag came into conflict with the law for the first time at the age of seven. The robbery of the machine had no consequences, as Martin could not be prosecuted before the law. However, his criminal activities continue. At thirteen he commits theft, is recaptured and transferred to a reformatory admitted. A psychological youth therapist takes care of the boy and wins his confidence. For the youth welfare office , however, the therapist's approach is far too time-consuming and it cuts the funds for it. Martin feels alone again and flees the home. In freedom he becomes criminal again, is caught again. Now the juvenile prison threatens . The 14-year-old hanged himself during the pre-trial detention in his cell.

Awards
The film received an honorable mention from the Ecumenical Jury at the Locarno Film Festival in 1980 . In the same year the film was awarded the German Film Prize in silver. Cinematographer Jürgen Jürges received the German Film Prize for best camera work.
In 1982 Norbert Kückelmann and Gerhard Gundel received the Adolf Grimme Prize with bronze for the film .
