Ranks of the Soviet armed forces 1940–1943

In the period 1940 to 1943 there were further reforms in the armed forces of the USSR, which became imperative with the continued growth of the Red Army and the naval navy . The tendency of the political elite of the young Soviet Union to place all ideas of bourgeois military science under general counterrevolutionary suspicion was still inherent in the system.

There was no alternative to giving up the sometimes idiosyncratic rank designations, such as KomandArm I , with the simultaneous introduction of additional ranks and the return to traditional designations, as has long been common in Anglophone or German-speaking armed forces. The distinction badges made as collar badges (large - for uniform coat, small - for field blouse) were retained until 1943.

Change of military rank designations

As of May 1940, according to a decree of the Presidium, the Supreme Soviets were given general and admiral ranks.

As a result, the following ranks have been introduced
  • General troop commanders: major general, lieutenant general, colonel general and army general
  • Artillery Commanders: Major General of Artillery, Lieutenant General of Artillery, Colonel General of Artillery
  • Commanders of the air force (including the naval forces ): Major General of the Aviators, Lieutenant General of the Aviators, Colonel General of the Aviators
  • Commanders of the armored forces: Major General of the Tanks, Lieutenant General of the Tanks, Colonel General of the Tanks
  • Commanders of the Intelligence Forces: Major General of the Intelligence Forces, Lieutenant General of the Intelligence Forces, Colonel General of the Intelligence Forces
  • Engineers' commanders: Major General of the Engineer Corps, Lieutenant General of the Engineer Corps, Colonel General of the Engineer Corps
  • Commanders of other technical troops (including chemical troops, railroad troops, vehicle transport troops, military topography service): Major General of the Technical Troops, Lieutenant General of the Technical Troops, Colonel General of the Technical Troops
  • Managerial staff: Major General of the General Manager, Lieutenant General of the General Manager, Colonel General of the General Manager
  • Navy Fleet flag officers (commanders & commanders on board): Rear Admiral, Vice Admiral, Admiral and Admiral of the Fleet
  • Generals of the naval war fleet in coastal service / coastal service, in coastal service: major general in coastal service, lieutenant general in coastal service and colonel general in coastal service
  • Flag officers in naval engineering service (in prominent uses): Rear Admiral Engineer, Vice Admiral Engineer, and Admiral Engineer

As early as June 4, 1940, the first inductions into the new ranks took place. The first officers appointed army general were Zhukov , Merezkow and Tjulenew .

The rank of Marshal of the Soviet Union created in September 1935 was retained

  • Collar badge (rhombus-shaped): a large star in gold thread embroidery, in the lower part two entwined laurel branches and the hammer & sickle emblem.
  • Chevron : a large red piped star with gold thread embroidery, underneath a red gold piped fabric corner entwined by two gold-colored red piped laurel branches

Ranks and badges of distinction

The rigorous rejection of badges of distinction in the form of shoulder pieces, as would have been in accordance with Russian traditions, was retained unchanged. Only the collar rank badges (large) have been modified. Here the rhombus-shaped pins have been replaced by five-pointed gold-colored stars. In addition, the emblem of the branch in question was applied. Stars were slightly smaller than the collar star for the rank of Marshal of the Soviet Union .

The collar badges (small) that were sewn onto the field blouse remained unchanged. However, these also showed the weapon color and bore the emblem of the weapon type.

The gold-colored angle of rank used up to now have been retained, but modified marginally.
