Dieter Gaier
Dieter Gaier (born May 12, 1928 in Stuttgart ; † December 15, 2002 in Göppingen ) was a German mathematician who dealt with function theory and approximation theory and their numerical aspects.
Life
Gaier studied at the University of Stuttgart (with Friedrich Lösch and Werner Meyer-König ) and the University of Rochester (with Wladimir Seidel ) and received his doctorate at both universities (1951 in Rochester and 1952 in Stuttgart with Meyer-König). He then spent two years at Harvard University with Joseph L. Walsh . In 1955 he completed his habilitation in Stuttgart ( on the conformal mapping of changeable areas ) and then held lectures there as a private lecturer. From 1959 he was a professor at the University of Giessen , where he stayed until his retirement in 1995. He was visiting scientist at Caltech several times .
Gaier was one of the main representatives of constructive complex analysis and organized several conferences in Oberwolfach on this. In particular, he dealt with conformal mapping , its numerical methods, approximation theory in the complex and limitation theory.
In 1962 he gave a lecture at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Stockholm ( On the discretization of Gerschgorin's integral equation ).
His estate is kept by the Central Archives of German Mathematicians' bequests at the Lower Saxony State and University Library in Göttingen .
