Dieter Markfeld (born October 3, 1954 ; † March 15, 2017 in Neustadt an der Orla ) was a football player in the former GDR Oberliga , the top division of the GDR Football Association . There he played in 1977/78 for BSG Wismut Gera .

Athletic career

Markfeld grew up in Triptis, Thuringia , where he played football for the company sports association (BSG) chemistry until 1974 . After finishing school, he completed an apprenticeship as a toolmaker. In 1972 he was part of the squad of the GDR junior national team, with which on October 8, 1972, as a substitute, played the junior international game GDR - Poland (3-0). At the age of almost 20, he moved to BSG Wismut Gera for the 1974/75 season, which had failed in the promotion round to the top division in the past season. Even with Markfeld, the Geraer could not prevail in the promotion round in 1975 . In November 1975, Markfeld had to do an 18-month military service, but was able to continue playing football in the second-rate GDR league with the Vorwärts Dessau army sports community . In May 1977, Markfeld returned to Wismut Gera in order to be able to intervene in the games of the league promotion round in time. He played four of the eight relegation games in which Gera reached second place and thus promotion to the top division.

The league season 1977/78 was a disaster for Wismut Gera. With only one win but with 21 defeats, the team became the worst relegated team in the history of the Oberliga. The 1.80 m large market field, which entered the league on matchday four, began as a midfielder, was also used as a libero, but also played in all positions of the three-way defense chain. In total, he came to the 26 game days of 20 missions and was successful with one goal.

After relegation, Markfeld stayed two more seasons with Wismut Gera in the GDR league, but switched to league rivals BSG Chemie Ilmenau at the age of 25 in the summer of 1980 , who had narrowly escaped relegation in the previous season. With their midfield director and later defense strategist Markfeld, the Ilmenau were able to assert themselves in the GDR league until 1984 and achieved their best placement in 1982 and 1983 with fourth place. When the GDR league was reduced to two seasons for the 1984/85 season, a ninth place in the 1983/84 season was not enough for qualification and Chemie Ilmenau had to relegate to the third-class district league. This was the reason for Markfeld to make another change in the summer of 1984. He joined the Gera district league club BSG Motor Zeulenroda , where he finally ended his career as a football player in the performance area.

Dieter Markfeld also remained active in football. At the age of 55, he joined the old men team of SV Blau-Weiß 90 Neustadt (Orla) in 2010 , where he also met the former GDR national player Matthias Liebers . At the age of 62, Markfeld succumbed to long-standing cancer in March 2017.
