Dieter Welzel (born March 3, 1929 in Eschwege ; † March 7, 2019 in Braunschweig ) was a German painter , handicraft and art teacher. From 1989 to 1996 he was President of the Braunschweig University of Fine Arts (HBK).

Live and act

Dieter Welzel studied craft and art education as well as history at the State University of Fine Arts Kassel and at the University of Göttingen (1949 to 1953) and passed the 1st and 2nd state exams for teaching at secondary schools . He then completed school service from 1955 to 1968, most recently as senior student adviser and specialist advisor. From 1968 to 1996 he was professor for didactics works at the HBK Braunschweig. At the same time, he was Rector from 1983 to 1987 and from 1989 to 1993, after being Vice-Rector from 1978 to 1983had been. In addition, he was President of the Braunschweig University of Art from 1993 to 1996. During Dieter Welzel's ten-year term of office, there was internal structure formation and external expansion, as well as the introduction of doctoral and post-doctoral qualifications. During his tenure in 1984, the main building was converted with the new building and the cafeteria. In 1990 it was expanded with a studio building for free art and in 1994 with a studio building for sculpture as well as artist studios and institute buildings on the ARTmax. Since the beginning of the 1990s, the vision of a center for art, media and design was designed by Prof. Welzel. Mediating between art, design and science was a primary concern for him, from which diverse collaborations within and outside the university developed. A differentiated range of courses developed and the guiding principle of interdisciplinarity emerged . He campaigned for the library to be rebuilt and for the original design by the Mexican architect Ricardo Legorreta to be implemented with the Mexican EXPO pavilion. Personalities such as Marina Abramović , John M. Armleder , Hermann Albert and Norbert Tadeusz were appointed.

Dieter Welzel died four days after completing his 90th year in Braunschweig.

Honors

In 1996 Welzel received the City of Braunschweig's Citizens' Medal for his services as rector and president of the Braunschweig University of Fine Arts . On the occasion of his 80th birthday, he was honored on March 3, 2009 with a reception by the city of Braunschweig in the State Theater , at which the then President of the HBK Braunschweig, Barbara Straka, gave the keynote address.
