Dietmar Popp

Dietmar Popp (* 1963 ) is a German art historian with a focus on East Central Europe .

Education and professional career

Dietmar Popp studied art history , archeology and monument conservation at the Universities of Bamberg and Karlsruhe from 1982 to 1992 . After a doctoral scholarship at the Bibliotheca Hertziana in Rome and participation in the local photo library as well as research stays in Florence and London , he received his doctorate in 1994 at the Technical University of Berlin with his thesis Duccio und die Antike. Studies on the conception and reception of antiquities in Sienese painting at the beginning of the 14th century . Following teaching assignments at the Otto Friedrich University in Bamberg and at the Philipps University in Marburg as well as activities in offices for cultural management as well as for architecture and urban development in Bayreuth , he was a research assistant at the humanities center for the history and culture of East Central Europe in Leipzig from 1999 to 2000 in the Jagiellonian project there. In 2000 he took over the management of the "Scientific Collections" department and the "Image Archive" at the Herder Institute in Marburg . Since then he has been responsible for several international cooperation projects, including above all the long-term project for the “ Dehio Handbook of Art Monuments in Poland” (expanded in 2018 to include the Baltic countries for the “Dehio Handbook of Art Monuments in East Central Europe”) and the development of the “Research Infrastructure for Art Monuments in East Central Europe (FoKO) ”.

Popp's work focuses on late medieval and early modern art in Central Europe, artistic and cultural relations between Germany and Poland in the 18th and 19th centuries, art and cultural history collections and museums in Poland and the Baltic States, as well as documentation and digitization of cultural heritage in East Central Europe.

  • 2017: Awarding of the Silver Cross of the Małopolska Voivodeship (Śrebrna Odznaka Honorowa Województwa Małopolskiego - Krzyż Małopolski) for long-term efforts to protect the cultural heritage of Lesser Poland
  • 2012: Bronze medal for special merits in cooperation with the University of Wrocław
  • 2009: Award in the Sybilla competition 2008 of the Polish Ministry of Culture in the category “Scientific Publication” (together with Ewa Barylewska-Szymańska, Elke Bauer and Wojciech Szymański) for “Otto Rollenhagen.
