Dietrich Schindler (born December 14, 1795 in Mollis , Switzerland ; † April 2, 1882 in Zurich , Switzerland) was a Swiss statesman , entrepreneur and art collector .

biography

After studying at the universities of Bonn , Heidelberg and Berlin (among others with Friedrich Schleiermacher and Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel ), in 1821 he worked as a textile merchant in Trieste . After returning to Switzerland , he was elected substitute judge at the appellate court in 1822 by the Glarner Landsgemeinde , in 1824 as pannier representative, in 1826 as witness and in 1834 as regional ensign. In 1837 he was elected Landammann (district president), with which Schindler was promoted to the highest state office. Schindler's political activities initially focused on the school system and road construction.

Schindler's greatest and lasting achievement was his commitment to a liberal constitution for the canton in the years 1836–37. At the beginning of his political activity, pre-revolutionary conditions still prevailed in Glarus. With the reorganization, the state of Glarus had received the most perfect of all Swiss democracies ( Ludwig Snell ). Nevertheless, the hardening of the fronts between the radicals and conservatives (as liberals ) pushed Schindler into a mediating position, which exposed him to sharp criticism from both sides. Finally, Schindler was resigned to his resignation, in 1840 as Landammann , in 1841 as a member of the government. In 1842 Schindler left Glarus and settled with his family in Zurich, where they were naturalized in 1855.

A silent partner of his father Samuel Schindler co-founded a textile factory "Jenny and Schindler" in Hard and Kennelbach ( Vorarlberg , Austria ), he led the life of a privateer . He was particularly active as an art collector and sponsor. Among other things, he created a top-class collection of engravings by Albrecht Dürer , which was donated to the Kunsthaus Zürich in 2000 . 55 sheets from the collection were shown in an exhibition there from November 3, 2006 to January 21, 2007.

His son Caspar Schindler-Escher was born in 1828.
