Diisooctyl phthalate is a mixture of branched C 8 phthalic acid esters. It usually contains little unbranched dioctyl phthalate , but can contain bis (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate .

Extraction and presentation

Diisooctyl phthalate can be obtained by reacting phthalic anhydride with 6-methylheptanol in the presence of an acid catalyst or octanol isomer mixtures in an oxo process.

properties

Diisooctyl phthalate is a flammable, hardly flammable, colorless liquid that is practically insoluble in water.

use

Diisooctyl phthalate is used as a plasticizer in polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polyvinyl acetate (PVA), rubber, cellulosic plastic, and polyurethane . It can u. a. occur in end products such as PVC floor coverings, wall cladding, artificial leather, PVC foams, foils and sealing compounds, as well as adhesives based on urethane or PVA and color binders containing PVA.
