The heather speedwell ( Veronica dillenii ), also known as Dillenius speedwell , is a species of plant in the plantain family (Plantaginaceae).

description

Vegetative characteristics

The Heath Speedwell grows as an annual herbaceous plant . It is closely related to the spring speedwell ( Veronica verna ) and differs from it, among other things, in the dark blue color of the flowers and the overall stronger shape. The stem , which is often reddish overflowing, with round peduncles , reaches heights of between 5 and 30 centimeters. It grows upright and is simple or branchy. In the upper part it is hairy glandular-shaggy. When dry, the whole plant turns black.

The almost bare, glandular ciliate leaves that are only slightly hairy on the edge are somewhat fleshy and dull green in color. The lowest leaves are short-stalked, egg-shaped and serrated. The remaining leaves sit directly on the stem and have linear, elongated sections that are again incised in a feathery manner.

Generative characteristics

The heather speedwell blooms mainly in April and May. The flowers sit in low-reaching racemose inflorescences . The peduncle is shorter than the calyx . The hermaphroditic flowers have a double flower envelope . The corolla has a diameter of about 5 millimeters and is deeply azure blue.

The fruit stalks have a length of about 1 to 2.5 millimeters. The flattened, glandular hairy, round kidney-shaped capsule fruit is shallow. The stylus has a length of about 1 to 1.5 millimeters and projects beyond the Ausrandung the fruit significantly. The compartments of the capsule fruit usually contain 9 to 13 seeds about 1.5 millimeters in size.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 16.

Occurrence and endangerment

The Heide-Ehrenpreis occurs from Central Eastern to Southeastern Europe and from Southern Europe via Central Europe to Sweden. It is also found in Western Asia, Central Asia, the Caucasus and Siberia. It is a temperate continental flora element . It is rare in Central Europe. In Germany, the Heide-Ehrenpreis occurs more often only in eastern Germany. In addition, it is very rare. It was classified as endangered in the 1996 Red List of Endangered Plant Species . In Austria it occurs very rarely in the eastern federal states and for the most part is endangered. In Switzerland it is very rare in Valais and Graubünden .

Veronica dillenii grows on dry grass , in sandy heather , in pine forests and on fields. It thrives best on dry, lime-free, shallow, weathered stone soils . In Central Europe it is a character type of the Sedo-Veronicion association.

Taxonomy

The first publication of Veronica dillenii was by Crantz . The specific epithet dillenii honors the German botanist Johann Jacob Dillen (1687–1747).
