Dimethyl methyl phosphonate , often abbreviated as DMMP , is a chemical compound from the group of phosphonates . It is a poisonous, colorless and hardly inflammable liquid.

Extraction and presentation

DMMP can be produced, for example, starting from trimethyl phosphite in an Arbusow reaction with a methyl halide.

properties

DMMP is a colorless, hardly inflammable liquid with a characteristic odor. Their flash point is 69 ° C.

use

Dimethyl methylphosphonate is mainly used as a flame retardant and as a fuel additive . In synthetic organic chemistry it is used to produce highly reactive ylides .

The compound is, among other things, the starting substance for the production of the chemical warfare agent and neurotoxin sarin .

In addition, DMMP is used as a test substance in the detection of chemical warfare agents (e.g. in ion mobility spectrometry ).

El Al flight 1862

DMMP achieved a certain media presence through the fact that after the crash of the El-Al flight in 1862 on October 4, 1992 near Amsterdam, it was only after several years that it became known that 240 kg of DMMP were on board the machine.
