The ANA Inspiration is one of the five major golf tournaments for women on the LPGA Tour . This championship was founded by Dinah Shore in 1972 and has been classified as a major tournament since 1983. The tournament is held each spring near Shore's home in Rancho Mirage (near Palm Springs ), California at the Mission Hills Country Club ( 33 ° 45 ′ 28.4 ″ N , 116 ° 25 ′ 32.4 ″ W ) carried out.
With a cash prize of over US $ 2 million , the winner automatically qualifies for the Stanford Financial Tour Championship , which is held at the end of the PGA Tour season.
Previous tournament names
The name of the tournament has changed several times over the years:
- 1972-1981: Colgate Dinah Shore
- 1982-1999: Nabisco Dinah Shore
- 2000-2001: Nabisco Championship
- 2002–2014: Kraft Nabisco Championship (named after the sponsor Kraft Foods Group )
- since 2015: ANA Inspiration
Even today the tournament is sometimes called Dinah Shore , although its name has not appeared in the official tournament name since 2002.
The tournament has been named after the sponsor ANA (All Nippon Airways) since 2015 .
The jump in the lake
Since 1988, the winner has traditionally celebrated her victory with a jump into the pond that surrounds the 18th green. The pond is known as the Champions Pond or "Poppy's Pond", named after Terry Wilcox , who has been tournament director since 1994 and is called "Poppy" by his grandchildren. Amy Alcott had started this tradition but it was not repeated regularly until in 1994 Donna Andrews repeated the leap that has since become an annual tradition. One of the most memorable jumps came in 1991 when Amy Alcott won for the third time and jumped with hostess Dinah Shore. Today the “jump in the lake” is “the green jacket ” of LPG.
Popularity with lesbians
The tournament is a popular destination for lesbians and every year attracts thousands of lesbians as spectators to the golf event and the supporting program. It became a lesbian spring break .
