The Dionysius Choir Krefeld e. V. (colloquially called " Dio Choir " for short ) was a choir founded and directed by the cantor , conductor and composer Hans-Jörg Böckeler . After Böckeler's death in 2018, he disbanded.

history

The then 24-year-old Böckeler founded the Dionysius Choir, initially as a youth choir, which was located at the Krefeld parish church of St. Dionysius . The focus was on the musical design of church services with texts by the then chaplain Wilhelm Willms , which were set to music by Hans-Jörg Böckeler. This new form of musical examination of faith and liturgy later became known as the New Spiritual Song .

After several differences between the choir and the parish administration at the time, the Dio choir finally left the parish in 1975 and set up as an independent choir. The singers found a new home on Roßstrasse. In addition to generous rehearsal opportunities and the residence of the choir director , the premises also housed the “Takt-Verlag” and the “Dioton-Studio”, in which not only choir but also instrumental recordings of various kinds took place.

Hans-Jörg Böckeler, the choir director and founder of the ensemble, passed away in March 2018. The choir then looked for a new director, but could not find any suitable candidates. So the choir dissolved after 50 years.

repertoire

The choir had a very extensive musical repertoire. In addition to sacred and classical works, it also included international folklore , gospel and modern pop music . The choir made a name for itself beyond the city limits of Krefeld , primarily through the interpretation of titles by the Les Humphries Singers , the Beatles and, most recently, the Swedish pop group ABBA .
