As a ski jumper, Dirk Kramer took part in the 1976/77 Four Hills Tournament at the age of 16 . At the competitions in Oberstdorf and Garmisch-Partenkirchen , however, he did not get past places 71 and 70, and at the subsequent competitions in Innsbruck and Bischofshofen he was no longer part of the German team. The 1978/79 tour turned out to be somewhat more successful when he was able to achieve 49th place in Oberstdorf, which is also his best result in a competition as part of the Four Hills Tournament . In cross-country skiing he became German champion in 1986 with the SC Willingen relay.
After he had already been active as a Nordic combined athlete in his youth, he soon switched to the camp of this discipline and became German individual champion in 1983 . With the German team, Kramer drove to the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo and finished 18th in the individual competition. He had already scored his first points in the Nordic Combined World Cup a few weeks earlier, on December 17, 1983, in Seefeld when he was twelfth. His best result in the World Cup was an eighth place in Oberwiesenthal on December 29, 1984. In that 1984/85 season , with 22nd place in the overall World Cup, he also achieved the best overall result in this competition series. Dirk Kramer ended his career as an active skier in 1988.
After finishing his career, Kramer worked for some time as a ski servicer in the German biathlete team. Later he trained as an administrative specialist.
