Dirk Stewen
Dirk Stewen (* 1972 in Dortmund ) is a German artist who lives and works in Hamburg . He works in the media of drawing , watercolor , photography and installation .
Life
From 1992 to 1995 Dirk Stewen studied art history at the Ruhr University in Bochum before he decided to study fine arts in 1995 and completed this training at the Hamburg University of Fine Arts in 2001 .

Dirk Stewen works with photo paper , pages from old art folders, posters , confetti in all sizes and colors, streamers , book covers , sometimes with wood or metal in the form of industrially prefabricated objects such as B. logs. He blackens with Indian ink , folds, puts seams, puts one type of paper on top of another, prints or photocopies on it and combines the resulting works into ensembles, collages or wall sculptures that carefully extend into the room. At the center of his work is the series of black confetti works.
Photography is key to Dirk Stewen's work . Here, not only the theoretical idea of perception and the possibilities of hiding in and through photography as well as the reference to the photographic material are of interest, but also the parallelism of the process-like creation of images in different media and here also the chemical process itself. The confetti works are based on photo paper, the black lakes on it are reminiscent of chemical photo developer solutions. The watercolor requires the same precision in the use of color and moisture of the paper as the Gallery of Dirk Stewen.
"Untitled (Soft Corps)" are confetti works that have been created since 2010. They are to be seen as the reversal and continuation of the large-format black confetti-ink works and function as their logical consequence. Stewen varies confetti snippets from different paper qualities and perforating thread lines to filigree arrangements, whereby the artist's interest in the diversity of the material is again striking: monochrome papers of various shapes, colors, textures, thicknesses and wear and tear stand next to multicolored cut-outs, which on closer inspection than Details of reprographs from previous watercolors reveal themselves.
