Dirk Vallée

Dirk Vallée (born August 6, 1965 in Millingen ; † May 3, 2017 in Aachen ) was a German civil engineer and university lecturer for urban construction and urban transport at RWTH Aachen University .

Live and act

After graduating from the Willibrord-Gymnasium in Emmerich , Vallée studied civil engineering at RWTH Aachen University from 1985 to 1991 with a degree in engineering. Vallée specialized in the fields of transport and spatial planning and was then taken on from 1991 to 1995 as a research assistant at the Transport Science Institute of RWTH Aachen University. In 1994 he received his doctorate from the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Surveying there . with the dissertation: "The transport offer as a basis for calculating mobility in city traffic", for which he was awarded the Friedrich Wilhelm Prize of the Friedrich Wilhelm Foundation in 1995.

The Stuttgart Region Association then took him on as a consultant for transport planning . From 1997, Vallée was also entrusted with the project management for the S-Bahn extensions and on April 2, 2002, was appointed Managing Director of the association. During his time in Stuttgart, from 1996 to 2000, he took on a teaching position at the Institute for Railway and Transport Systems at the University of Stuttgart and from 2002 a teaching position for regional planning as part of the master's degree in urban development at the Stuttgart University of Technology .

In February 2008, Vallée accepted a call to RWTH Aachen University, where he was appointed professor and director of the Institute for Urban Planning and Urban Transport. He performed this service until his death on May 3, 2017.

Vallée was a member of several professional associations and societies, including the German Transport Science Society , the Research Society for Roads and Transport , the Academy for Spatial Research and Regional Planning and several regional working groups. In addition, he has been an advisory board for municipal development in Rhineland-Palatinate since 2008 and a scientific advisory board at the German Institute for Urban Studies since 2011 .

Vallée has been involved in numerous research projects throughout his professional life. He was in demand as a reviewer and consultant and was, partly in collaboration with well-known co-authors, author and editor of a large number of books and articles for a wide variety of specialist journals.

Dirk Vallée found his final resting place in the Aachen forest cemetery . He left a wife and three sons.
