Dirk van der Aa (also: Theodorus van der Ha (baptismal name); * March 1, 1731 (date of baptism) in The Hague ; † February 23, 1809 ibid) was a Dutch painter who is best known for his allegories .

Life

Dirk van der Aa made several study trips to Paris before he became a member of the Guild of St. Luke in 1755 and a student of Johann Heinrich Keller in The Hague. He later studied with the otherwise little-known coach painter Gerrit Mes , with whom he also shared a studio . There both worked mainly on decorative paintings for room furnishings, panels and carriages. Until his death, Van der Aa was a member of the Renswoude Foundation, where an auction of his artistic legacy took place on July 25, 1809.

Van der Aa painted allegories with cupids in a skilful composition and safe drawing. a. contemporary French painters followed. On the occasion of Wilhelm V's entry into The Hague, Van der Aa designed the gate of honor in 1768, which is now in the Kupferstichkabinett in Amsterdam . In the house of Baron van Heeckeren van Kell (Lange Voorhout 32 in The Hague), he painted a room with wallpaper with Arcadian landscapes .

Van der Aa's students included Evert Morel , Cornelis Kuipers , Louis Moritz and his nephew Jacob van der Aa .

His works are valued at up to $ 100,000 on the art market today.
