The Matacoto district is located in the Yungay Province in the Ancash region of western Peru . The district founded on November 7, 1955 has an area of ​​47 km². The 2017 census counted 1496 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 1263, in 2007 it was 1482. The administrative center is the village of Matacoto with 353 inhabitants at an altitude of about 2480  m (as of 2017). Matacoto is 4 km south of the provincial capital Yungay .

Geographical location

The district of Matacoto is located on the west bank of the north-northwest flowing Río Santa in the northwest of the Yungay province. In the west it extends to the foothills of the Cordillera Negra .

The Matacoto district borders on the Pueblo Libre district ( Huaylas Province ) in the west, the Yungay district in the northeast, the Ranrahirca , Mancos and Shupluy districts in the southeast and the Cascapara district in the south .
